You've probably already noticed it without paying attention: that tiny hidden pocket in your jeans. Yet, it has a surprising history dating back to the time of cowboys and explains why it still exists today.
You've almost certainly seen it before without really paying attention. This tiny pocket hidden inside the main pocket of your jeans has been a part of our daily lives forever… but very few people know what its original purpose was. And yet, its history dates back to the Wild West, to the time of cowboys and gold prospectors. A surprising story that explains why this little detail still exists today.
The story of the little jeans pocket

To understand the purpose of this small pocket, we need to go back to 1873, when the first jeans were created by Levi Strauss. Originally, these pants were not at all a fashion item, but work clothes intended for miners, factory workers, and cowboys.
At that time, wristwatches did not yet exist. Men used pocket watches, attached to a small chain. The problem was that these watches were fragile and could easily break during work.
Levi Strauss therefore had a simple but ingenious idea: to add a small pocket inside the large pocket to protect the watch. This pocket was even called the "watch pocket" at the time.
